Real help for music educators — from someone who's been in the band room.

Prep Beats is a free resource hub for band directors, choir and orchestra teachers, and anyone who keeps music alive in schools. Every article here is written from lived classroom experience — not recycled advice — to help you teach better, lead stronger programs, and take care of yourself while you do it.

I'm Jason Griffith, Ed.D. — a music educator and school administrator with more than three decades in public education. I built a high-school band program from 35 students to over 400, secured more than $600,000 in grants, earned a Kennedy Center Honorable Mention, and led an ensemble chosen as Kentucky's sole representative in a Presidential Inauguration Parade. I started Prep Beats to put what I've learned — the wins, the hard lessons, and the practical fixes — in reach of every music teacher who needs it.

What you'll find here:
  • Rehearsal & pedagogy — practical techniques for intonation, balance, rhythm, and getting more out of every rehearsal minute.
  • Building & funding a program — grants, boosters, instrument sourcing, and growing a program from the ground up.
  • Teacher wellbeing — burnout, workload, voice care, and staying in love with teaching music.
  • Advocacy & the profession — making the case for music, navigating administration, and the realities of the job.
  • Free music-theory games — an interactive Teaching Hub of browser games that make note values, rhythm, and key signatures fun to practice.
