About Prep Beats

Music educators leading a band rehearsal

Prep Beats is a resource hub for music educators and the students they teach. We exist to make musical growth practical, accessible, and sustainable — whether you are a brand-new band director walking into your first classroom, a veteran teacher looking for fresh ideas, or a student trying to build real skills between lessons.

Why We Started

Music education is one of the most demanding jobs in any school. Directors are expected to be performers, conductors, accountants, event planners, counselors, and community liaisons — often all in the same week. New educators in particular are frequently handed enormous responsibility with very little practical guidance on how to manage it. Prep Beats began as an answer to that gap: a place where the hard-won, day-to-day knowledge of the profession is written down, organized, and shared freely.

What You'll Find Here

Our library includes well over a hundred in-depth articles covering classroom pedagogy, rehearsal strategy, ensemble building, student motivation, special education and accessibility, teacher wellness and vocal health, professional development, and navigating the realities of school administration. Alongside the writing, our Teaching Hub offers interactive rhythm and ear-training tools designed to help students develop core musical literacy through active practice rather than passive drilling. We also maintain a Jobs Board to help connect music educators with opportunities in the field.

Everything we publish is built around a single idea: meet musicians and teachers where they are, and give them something they can actually use the next day.

Who We Are

Prep Beats is created and maintained by experienced music educators and performers who have lived the work — in the practice room, on the podium, and in front of a full classroom. The perspective you'll find across the site comes from real teaching experience, not theory at a distance. We understand the challenges our readers face because we have faced them too.

Our Commitment

We believe strong music programs change lives, and that the educators who run them deserve real support. Our commitment is to keep producing honest, practical, high-quality resources that help music teachers grow, sustain their careers, and serve their students well — and to keep that work accessible to the people who need it most.
